The shiteness of being Scottish

The name of this blog has been known to upset and offend, particularly those who have never heard of Trainspotting or Irvine Welsh.

Perhaps it’s shite being Scottish is a provocative name for a blog about climbing mountains, but it has to be understood in context. It has only ever been my intention to amuse, entertain and encourage; to cajole and inspire, yes, but never deliberately to upset or offend. So if you feel your hackles rising, please do not jump to conclusions or rush to judgement.

Read about the blog here, about why it is called it’s shite being Scottish here and about why the subtitle is Mindfulness, Munro-bagging and cancer here.

The shiteness of being Scottish is a general phenomenon, suffered by many Scots daily. There is much more that could be made of the phrase than I squeeze out of it myself.

I have therefore decided to open up this space to anybody who has something to say about the shiteness of being Scottish. You can read the first such essay here.

Because this site is also accessed by the address www.visitscotland.blog, I am keen to give space to polemic and analysis in relation to the so called “tourist industry” in Scotland.

If you feel you might have something to contribute, please get in touch via dncnspnc at gmail dot com with a proposal.

If you feel able to contribute to my fuel fund (the petrol for a return trip to the mountains in the campervan costs up to sixty quid) then please use the same address at PayPal with the reference I S B S, or get in touch in another way.

If you feel able to support the publication of my book or would like to fund me while I am writing it, please use the same email address, either to get in touch or with reference B O O K at PayPal.

If you would like me to sponsor, endorse or review technical clothing or equipment, please use the above email address to get in touch with a proposal

You can also offer support by displaying a Munro Philosopher sticker – shown below. These are available for a nominal price in two sizes and also in pink. If you would like one or more please send your postal address to dncnspnc at gmail dot com.

I know they always say the name of a blog is important but I think it depends on why you blog. I started the GSM blog because I was frustrated with everything I saw around me, esp in politics and in my job in community work. It was so flattering when people started reading it but I always made a point to remember that I wrote for me to stop me going postal and to just express an opinion. I also tried to write in the same way I had conversations esp around the language used, it doesn’t have to be complicated if anyone came across it because a lot of the blogs I came across were fancy with fancy words and difficult to read so I just wanted a simple short blog.

  3. […] Many interesting and articulate people comment and take part in detailed and often protracted discussions about issues raised in blogs. These are often as interesting as the original post and no blogger would deny that a healthy string of comments after a post adds value their site. I understand why a person would want only to read posts from their favourite bloggers and to comment, but not to wish to have a blog of their own. Nevertheless, I feel that should such a person have something more substantial to contribute, then there should be space available for them to do so. I have therefore decided to make space available at this blog for such people, under the rubric of the shiteness of being Scottish. […]
